Taylor Swift’s status as the “Queen of Pop” only accentuates the critique of her political positioning. She embodies the archetype of centrism, a stance that, far from being neutral, acts as direct structural support for the far-right. By channeling the energy of a massive fanbase toward a consensus pop that "will not significantly disrupt" [1], Swift neutralizes the potential for political mobilization. This centrism is not passive, but actively complicit: the sponsor of her Eras Tour, Capital One, is a “Zionist” bank that participated in a $500 million loan to Elbit Systems Ltd, an Israeli manufacturer of weapons and surveillance systems [2]. This direct financial link turns her commercial success into a transaction that concretely supports the military-industrial complex and the status quo beneficial to the totalitarian Trump regime [1, 2].
Swift’s silence on the genocide in Palestine is a form of approval that the establishment has paradoxically chosen to sanctify. Her designation as “Person of the Year 2023” by TIME magazine [6], despite her muteness in the face of “the worst US-backed atrocities” [2], exposes the moral bankruptcy of the industry. This choice provoked outrage from pro-Palestinian users, who denounced the contrast with the title given to Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2022 and demanded the recognition go to Palestinian journalists like Motaz Azaiza who risk their lives to document the facts [6]. This inaction is all the more damning given that her own community, the #SwiftiesForPalestine, massively pressured her, holding up signs demanding she “speak now” [4]. Her silence betrays her own promise, made in her documentary Miss Americana, to be on the “right side of history” [4], and de facto validates the unwavering support of both the Democratic and MAGA parties for Israel.
Contemporary America demands a music of resistance. Swift’s answer to this call is her return to mainstream pop with The Life of a Show Girl [1]. The music focuses on inoffensive personal themes [1], acting as a mass distraction that rejects activism. Furthermore, her organization’s attitude toward fan political engagement is revealing of this desire for neutralization: at a concert in Aviva Stadium, a spectator’s Palestinian flag was confiscated by staff [5]. By choosing to promote the film Happy Gilmore 2 and its director, Adam Sandler, labeled a “self-professed Zionist” [2], Swift confirms that her priority is maximal commercial success and consensual entertainment [1, 2, 5, 6].
Sabrina Carpenter: The Extension of Centrism and Calculated Complicity
The inclusion of Sabrina Carpenter, the “pop sensation of the hour” [1], in Swift’s album is not just a musical addition, but the validation of a generational strategy of political neutralization. Despite her 50 million subscribers, Carpenter has remained “mostly silent on the genocide” perpetrated against Palestinians [3]. Her only public gesture, a donation to the PCRF (Palestine Children’s Relief Fund) after seven months of intensified genocide, appears as a calculated response to public pressure [3]. This action is overshadowed by her continued association with “vehement Zionist” figures and her advertisements for “Zionist brands” such as Coca-Cola, Samsung, and Skims [3]. She is thus the extension of the Swift brand, perpetuating the model that rewards commercial neutrality over political engagement [1, 3].
Institutional Complicity: CBC/Radio-Canada and the Normalization of Colonialism
The complicity of centrism is institutional and endemic within Canadian state media. CBC/Radio-Canada has been accused of playing an active role in the “manufacturing of consent for genocide” [8, 14] through “inadequate and inaccurate” coverage of Palestine [7, 8]. This policy has resulted in a “Palestine exception” [8] where human rights coverage is encouraged globally, except regarding Palestinian colonization [8]. An analysis by The Breach notably showed that the CBC program The National devoted more airtime to Israeli victims than to Palestinian victims in its coverage of events in Gaza [17].
The group Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) documented in 2023 and 2024 hundreds of cases where media minimize threats against pro-Palestine protesters [16]. The CBC has been specifically criticized for its use of watered-down terms like “food insecurity” to describe the human-made famine in Gaza [16].
The influence of the pro-Israel pressure group HonestReporting Canada (HRC) is documented as a major factor in this censorship [14, 15]. HRC maintains a “silent war” [15] that generates a “chilling effect” [15]. Award-winning journalist Samira Mohyeddin, a frequent target of HRC, stated that the group “lives in the minds of managers and editors” and that she had been reprimanded by her own management [15].
This climate of censorship is exacerbated by the CBC’s linguistic policy. The organization has refused to use the word “Palestine” as a proper noun since the early 1970s [18]. The CBC style guide asserts that there is “no modern country of Palestine” [18], a position critics denounce as an attempt to “eradicate Palestinian national identity” [18]. Radio host Duncan McCue was notably forced to apologize on air and remove the word from his show [18]. Consequently, the CBC’s internal Language Guide bans the use of the terms “colonization” and “apartheid” [12, 13]. This policy led journalist Arfa Rana to resign in October 2024, accusing the CBC of complicity [12, 13].
The omission of context is systematic. An August 2025 CounterPunch article claims that coverage of the October 7, 2023 attack was rarely contextualized by the 75 years of occupation or violations of international law [14]. The CBC minimized or ignored major legal decisions, such as the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) finding in January 2024 on “plausible genocide” [14]. The public broadcaster also ignored the visit of UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese in November 2024 [14]. Ombudsman Jack Nagler was also criticized for minimizing HRC’s influence and frequently resorting to the “both sides fallacy” [14].
This normalization of colonialism is reinforced by the promotion of centrist, pro-Israel political stances at the highest level of the Canadian state. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “solemnly declared himself a Zionist” in March 2025 [9]. Similarly, Mark Carney, a prominent liberal economic figure, sparked controversy in 2025 for suggesting that efforts should be made to establish a “Zionist Palestine” [10]. CBC/Radio-Canada’s complicity involves promoting these figures and, by extension, artists like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, whose commercial success relies on a sanitized centrism.
